Title:   A Complete Atlas of Recalibrated HST FOS Spectra of Active 
         Galactic Nuclei and Quasars --- Paper I: Pre-COSTAR Spectra

Description of contents: 

The tar file includes 892 FITS files that contain recalibrated, merged
spectra for 223 Active Galactic Nuclei and Quasars obtained using the
Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph prior to the
installation of COSTAR.

Each merged object spectrum consists of 4 FITS files, objectname.c0f,
objectname.c1f, objectname.c2f, and objectname.cqf, where objectname
is the name of the object.  The translations between the target names
given in the paper and the corresponding FITS files is provided in
Table 1.

The c0f, c1f, c2f, and cqf files are FITS format equivalents of the
Calibrated Flux, Calibrated Wavelength, Calibrated Statistical Error,
and Calibrated Data Quality files described in section 30.1.2 of the
HST Data Handbook.  Briefly, the c0f, c1f, c2f, and cqf files specify
the central wavelength, flux (in erg /cm**2 /s /angstrom), statistical
error in the flux, and data quality, respectively, of each pixel in
the spectrum.  The data quality should be interpreted as described in
Table 30.2 of the HST Data Handbook, with additional values added as 
described in the paper.

System requirements: 

Any software that can read FITS files containing a one dimensional
32-bit real array in the primary HDU can read the data.  Wavelengths
and fluxes are stored in separate FITS files, so software that
supports separate wavelength and flux arrays is required.  Examples
include the ST ScI stsdas package in IRAF, and IDL.
